As he dug her out from beneath the shattered remains of what was once their dream, he held her lifeless body tightly in his arms, sobbing into the blood stained hair. He looked wildly about him in an attempt to see any signs of life, but all that there was surrounding him was death’s shadow lurking in the eerie silence.
‘Who could do such a thing?!’, his cries of pain and anguish breaking the silence that once surrounded him, and as he held his love even more closely, a ominous droning sound was to be heard in the distance moving ever closer to where he sat, broken and weary.
As the glimpsed the mechanical beast from the corner of his eye, only now coming within his line of sight, forever was droning towards his position. He sat there, eyes filled with grief and terror, frozen and paralysed at the sight of this man made creature.
The mechanical monster came to a stop before him, as the sat clutching his love in his arms, the beast made a clanking sound as a hatch opened above and not the face of a monster stared back but that of a man in uniform.
‘Why have you done this? Why all this ruin and chaos?’ the man asked wearily clutching ever tighter to the lifeless body of the woman the he had vowed to love till death do them part. ’For god and country, for god… and country’ the cold hard face peering from the bowels of the beast answered, and with a gesture of his hand, as an explosion suddenly shattered the silence as smoke danced across the horizon.
